Discovering Marseille

Discovering Marseille

Marseille is enriched by its 2,600-year-old history. Passing through the hands of the Romans, the Visigoths and the Francs, it reigned in the region for centuries before its power waned in the Middle-Ages, only to regain its former glory after the French Revolution. Since the end of the 20th century, the city has been booming once again.

Marseille remains a crossroads between the civilizations of Europe and North Africa, which lies just across the sea. It is a city of art and history, and in 2013 it welcomed more than 10 million visitors as the European Capital of Culture. It was also voted European City of 2014.

Marseille and its cultural heritage

Marseille and its cultural heritage

Marseille, the Provençale city par excellence, offers its visitors a cultural heritage rich in history and with a diverse culture. Ask your chauffeur to take you to follow in the footsteps of Napoléon III, who had the Palais du Pharo built in 1858. Then ask your chauffeur to take you to Notre Dame-de-la-Garde basilica, known as ‘La Bonne Mère’ (the ‘Good Mother’), built in 1214. Within the heart of the city, he can also show you the Palais des Arts, dating from the 19th century.

Between palaces and churches, Greek and Roman ruins, cathedrals, castles and botanical gardens, your chauffeur will help you to discover Marseille’s heritage.

Aix-en-Provence

Aix-en-Provence

The city of Aix-en-Provence was founded by the Romans in 123 BC, and is renowned for its Roman baths. It is proud to be one of the sunniest cities in France, with more than 300 days of blue sky per year. It contains over a thousand fountains, as well as cafés, bookstores and beautiful residences along the Cours Mirabeau Boulevard, which separates the Old City from the more recent neighbourhoods.

Ask to be dropped off along the Cours Mirabeau, in the Old City and in the Mazarin Quarter, and don’t hesitate to stop at a café or a market.

Explore the heights of the Region

Explore the heights of the Region

With your Chabé chauffeur, you can embark on an exploration of the famous calanques, or rocky coves. The typical 18th-century village of Cassis and its small fishing port will be the ideal starting point. From there, you can visit Cap Canaille, the tallest cliff in Europe. If it’s heights you’re looking for, the Sainte-Baume Mountains are waiting for you – its famous cave is a must-see.

In Allauch, you’ll become familiar with the hill of Notre-Dame-du-Château, especially if you have the opportunity to visit in the period of the Midnight Mass, for the descent of the shepherds.

Provence and the Sea

Provence and the Sea

Provence has a long held strategic location given its position by the sea. Just as strategic was the position of the Château d’If and the Islands of Frioul in the middle of the bay, where pirates dropped anchor in times past.

Your chauffeur can take you on an excursion along the water’s edge to enjoy the sunshine and to see the natural limestone formation known as the Calanques. If you are dining out, do not forget to taste a good bouillabaisse, the region’s most famous dish.
